More than 15 works by Fernando Botero will be auctioned by the prestigious auction house Christie's
“A work that the master returned to again and again,” say experts in Latin American art about The Dancers, one of the paintings by Fernando Botero that will be auctioned. What are the estimated prices?
The prestigious auction house Christie's will auction this Tuesday, March 12, 2024, in New York, 16 works by the master Fernando Botero. It will be one of the largest auctions of the Colombian painter's paintings and sculptures.
In less than 24 hours, Botero's dancers will have a new owner. “It is a work that the master returned to again and again, from 1970 to the 21st century,” said Diana Bramham, an expert in Latin American art about the painting.
But this is not the only work at auction, in two days, Christie's expects to make $18 million.
“60 lots of historical artists of Latin American art will be auctioned, such as Diego Rivera, Fernando de Szyslo, Carlos Garaicoa and Fernando Botero, of which 16 of the 60 works auctioned will be present, of which The Dancers stand out, a sculpture 3 meters high for the estimated price of $2,500,000 and a painting from 2010 that has an estimated price of $1,500,000,” said Christian Padilla, historian, writer and curator.
It is important to mention that, to this day, the owner of the monumental sculpture of The Dancers bought it in 2007 directly from Fernando Botero. Currently this work is installed in the plaza in front of Rockefeller Center.
