MSSA textile companies exhibit canvas in support of Palestine at the MSSA
Come and see Free Palestine, a canvas created by the MSSA Textiles as a sign of solidarity with the Palestinian people, which is on display at the Salvador Allende Solidarity Museum until May 26.
Given the anguish and sadness they felt due to the massacre against the Palestinian people, the group of art workers and artisans, MSSA Textiles, created the Free Palestine canvas as a show of support for the resistance and freedom for Palestinian women and girls. Currently, the textile is exhibited at the MSSA temporarily, sharing space with the exhibition BODYESCULTURE: memory from the urgency of the present, curated by Caroll Yasky and Daniela Berger.
The canvas was originally made to take to the commemorative march for International Women's Day, where the textile companies were present along with the team from the Salvador Allende Solidarity Museum.
“Every day the human losses increased more. After months of working on a 40x50 cm project, designed for 8M, we decided to make it larger so that it could be read from the north of our country to Palestine. We wanted to portray women's faces, since they are the most beaten along with children and the elderly, biologically and emotionally,” says Mayi Valdebenito, member of Textileras MSSA.
Since its inception in 2018, the group has been dedicated to textile creation with a political focus. They gather and mobilize to make visible demonstrations around memory, human rights and feminism through their textiles.
On this occasion, they created the canvas based on a collective reflection. “We define ourselves as thinking women who contribute within this individualistic culture. Through our textiles, we invite politicization, reflection and conversation for a future that has to be supportive, empathetic and careful with the environment,” adds Mayi.
This canvas is exhibited in the Salvador Allende Solidarity Museum as a recognition of her work and for the years of her creating in collaboration with the MSSA.
Palestine Libre will be exhibited until the weekend of Heritage Day, May 25 and 26, an event in which the MSSA Textiles will carry out a collective textile intervention activity to reflect on the theme of the canvas.
