Historical Museum opens Mythos exhibition on Saturday

Composed of nine paintings by visual artist Rubião Cozer, the exhibition “Mythos: Under the Wings of Our Fables” will be open to visitors starting Saturday (22) at the Sorocabano Historical Museum (MHS), located in Vila Hortência, attached to the “Quinzinho de Barros” Municipal Zoological Park.

The exhibition, promoted by the Municipal Department of Culture, portrays mythological female figures, represented by birds, making them part of each one’s narrative. According to the artist, the works - produced using the oil on canvas technique - materialize stories, evoking deep symbolisms between women and birds, such as freedom and destiny, lightness and strength, instinct and transcendence.

In this way, figures such as Aphrodite, Hecate, Lachesis, Persephone, Athena, Ophelia, Harpies and the Maiden Heron are represented in the works, highlighting not only the mythical force, but also the connection between the human and the winged. “Since ancient times, the feminine and the winged have been intertwined in myths and fables that span cultures and centuries. This exhibition explores the strength, mystery and transcendence of these figures,” explains Rubião.

Rubião Cozer grew up in the interior of the state of São Paulo and, from an early age, was immersed in different artistic expressions. At the age of 14, he participated in his first collective exhibition together with the launch of a fanzine, which years later inspired him to found his own illustration studio alongside other local artists, developing editorial and advertising projects.

He graduated in Advertising and, shortly after graduation, was invited to open his own agency, where he worked as creative director for ten years, focusing on graphic design, illustration, video production and jingles. At the same time, he dedicated himself to artistic performance in bands and held exhibitions of works that pay homage to iconic rock figures.

Since the end of 2019, Rubião has dedicated himself entirely to visual arts in his studio, participating in group exhibitions in São Paulo and exploring a production that focuses on the complexity of the human figure. Most of his portraits are based on images of unknown people referenced from social media or photography books that accentuate a certain impersonality and provoke the viewer to reflect on the contradictions of modern life. He seeks to capture the human essence through a portrait that is, at the same time, intimate and distant, reflecting the contradictory relationships of the current world.

Rubião won the “Prof. Flávio Gagliardi” Visual Arts Award in 2023, with the work “Oxum” and, in 2024, he won an award in India, at the “Art of Motocycling” event, organized by the Royal Enfield brand, an Indian multinational motorcycle manufacturing company. He entered the “Handmade Art” and “Comic Book” categories and won the Brazilian stage in both categories. He then competed against other artists from Latin America and was the overall winner of the “Handmade Art” category with his work “Stay Vintage”.

Zoo tickets cost R$8 for people aged 12 to 59 and R$4 for children aged 6 to 11, as well as students in elementary, middle, technical or higher education recognized by the MEC, upon proof of enrollment or a valid student ID. Children up to five years old, seniors over 60 years old and people with disabilities, who also provide a companion when necessary and when this condition is proven, are exempt from paying the entrance fee.

“Mythos: Under the Wings of Our Fables” will be open to the public from Tuesday to Friday, from 9 am to 4 pm, and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, from 11 am to 4 pm, until April 27. The MHS is located at Rua Theodoro Kaisel, 883, in Vila Hortência. (From the Newsroom, with information from the City of Sorocaba)
