The 33rd edition of the Biarritz Latin American Film Festival, which took place between September 21 and 27 in the French city, featured two Peruvian photography artists who exhibited their work at the festival, as well as the presentation of Peruvian-produced films at the event.

The exhibitions “Shipibo-Konibo. Portraits of my blood”, by David Díaz Gonzáles and “Images de pensé” by Alejandro León Cannok were on display during the festival, and the Peruvian embassy in France collaborated in the promotion of the exhibition.

During the opening ceremony, the Peruvian ambassador, Rolando Ruíz Rosas, expressed his gratitude to the president of the Biarritz Festival, Serge Fohr, for providing a privileged space for Peruvian photography in this edition that marks the beginning of “a window to Latin American photography, adding to the work that the festival has been doing for more than three decades for cinema produced on the other side of the Atlantic and even on the shores of the Pacific.”

After the presentation by the Head of the Peruvian Diplomatic Mission, a round table on contemporary Peruvian photography and the Anthropocene was held, moderated by Patric Clanet, Director of the Festival's photography program, and Peruvian photographers Alejandro León and, via videoconference, Roberto Huarcaya, who presented the work that is currently on display in the Peru pavilion of the Venice art biennial.

The photographic series by David Díaz Gonzales, selected by the Inca Garcilaso Cultural Center, captures the essence of the daily life of the Shipibo-Konibo, from which he is originally from. Through his lens, Díaz reflects an intimate and personal look at the Amazonian cultural identity, which in turn dialogues with the contemporary global context. For his part, León Cannock, visual philosopher and curator, explores in his photographic work the dynamics of subjectivation and artistic creation, proposing a reflection on the nature of thought itself and its representation through the image.

Finally, the film festival screened the Peruvian films Cuadrilátero by Daniel Rodríguez Risco; and Raíz, by Franco García Becerra; and the Peruvian-Venezuelan co-production Zafari, by Mariana Rondón, competing for the best documentary feature film in this 33rd edition of the Biarritz Latin American Film Festival that concludes this Saturday, September 28; while Pakucha, by Tito Catacora and Feather in the wind, by Alex Heitler, the latter a Peruvian-French co-production, are exhibited in the Special Screenings section.
