Latin American sacred art is reborn with the work "San Miguel Arcángel", by Christian Escobar

Guatemala celebrates the strength of San Miguel in its Metropolitan Cathedral with the work of Chrispapita, a young promise of sacred art
GUATEMALA CITY.- In the heart of Guatemala City, the majestic Metropolitan Cathedral has received one of the most impressive pieces of contemporary sacred art that has emerged in the region in recent years: San Miguel Arcángel, by the artist Christian Escobar. The work, of large dimensions (2 meters high by 1.82 meters wide), is a virtuoso display of hyperrealistic technique in acrylic on canvas, where the young Guatemalan, also known by his pseudonym Chrispapita, has achieved a remarkable balance between visual strength and spiritual depth.
Using the chiaroscuro technique, traditional in Italian Baroque, Escobar recreates a scene of great symbolism and devotion: the victory of Saint Michael over Satan, a central theme in religious iconography. This emblematic figure, which with its imposing armor and serenity transmits a mixture of strength and calm, not only pays homage to the principles of classical sacred art, but also incorporates a deeply human perspective. The work will be available to the public until January 5, 2025, and is anticipated to be one of the most relevant exhibitions of the season in the region.
Technical mastery

With this work, Guatemalan Christian Escobar (1982) emerges as a young promise of contemporary sacred art, respecting the majesty of ancient sacred art. His style is characterized by a clear influence of classical Baroque, where the chiaroscuro technique serves to intensify the drama of his compositions and highlight the emotional complexity of his characters. In San Miguel Arcángel, Escobar displays an impressive mastery of this technique, creating contrasts of light and shadow that outline every feature of the archangel, from his determined posture to the shine of his armor and the details on his face that reveal fatigue and perspiration, an effect achieved through hyperrealism. These nuances, which together give the figure a deeply human dimension, demonstrate Escobar's ability to connect classical elements with a contemporary narrative.

During the unveiling ceremony, architect María Sánchez, recognized for her influence in the Guatemalan cultural sphere, said: "The work San Miguel Arcángel invites us to leave behind the noise of the world and open our hearts to the transcendental. The greatest wealth of this work lies in its size and in the spiritual symbolism executed with great delicacy and care. It represents strength and calm, radiating a sense of majesty and serenity, of authority and benevolence; it stands firm and secure, prepared for battle, but with peace that accompanies it, creating an atmosphere of divine protection."

The figure of San Miguel in this work is, for Escobar, the personification of the victory of light over darkness, of the triumph of the spirit over the temptations of the ego. This message of duality and resistance, says Escobar, is especially significant in a current context in which art can serve as a spiritual refuge. "San Miguel Arcángel is the representation of the victory of light over darkness, of virtue over the ego. In this life of dualities, one can only live under the gaze of love or fear, and being close to God makes us experience an illuminated life in all its splendor. My message is that we be light in this world, especially in these times of darkness,” said the artist.
“God is beauty”

In the context of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago de Guatemala, a site of relevant historical and architectural heritage in Latin America, Escobar's work finds a perfect setting for its unveiling to the public. Dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel as patron and protector, the Cathedral temporarily exhibits the piece as a tribute to both its history and its role in the spiritual life of Guatemalans.

The work, which represents Saint Michael at the decisive moment of his victory over the forces of evil, shows an approach that is as aesthetic as it is deeply spiritual. For those who appreciate the details, the signs of effort on the face and body of the archangel are exquisite details that symbolize the spiritual struggle, which even divine beings face. The archangel presents himself as a serene defender, whose presence radiates protection for a humanity in search of peace and strength.

Chrispapita's work has the power to lead the viewer to a spiritual reflection, a process that María Sánchez describes as the reminder of our connection with the eternal: “To contemplate beauty is to remember that place to which we belong, that longing for the eternal that dwells in the depths of our being, because God is Beauty itself, the greatest beauty that exists,” she said.
Contemporary sacred art

With San Miguel Arcángel, Escobar not only explores themes of spirituality, but revitalizes an artistic genre that connects the viewer with a transcendent sense of life. His mastery of hyperrealism and the chiaroscuro technique are evident throughout his career as an artist, leading him to exhibit in important cities such as Miami, New York and Mexico City. He also represented Guatemala at the Venice Art Biennale in 2022 and his work has been appreciated in historical places such as the Santa Severa Castle in Rome, in Belgium and India.

For those seeking a visual, historical and spiritual experience, the work of Christian Escobar is a must-see at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago de Guatemala. This exhibition is a unique opportunity to witness the renaissance of sacred art in Latin America, with a work that, from its composition and technique to its message, promises to leave a lasting mark on the cultural and spiritual landscape of the region.
