“Alienaciones del límites” (Alienations of the Limit), the Cuban exhibition that brings together the work of 66 female artists
The collective exhibition is curated by Alay Fuentes Bejerano. It opened on November 25 and can be visited for a month at the National Office of Industrial Design in Havana.
“Alienaciones del límites” (Alienations of the Limit) is one of the most resonant exhibitions of current Latin American art. It takes place in Cuba and is characterized by bringing together the work of 66 female artists. The aim of the exhibition is to question the power structures that give rise to inequality and celebrate the diversity of female discourses in art. The collective exhibition is part of the programming of the new edition of the Havana Biennial.
Alignments of the Limit
On November 15, the 15th Havana Biennial began, a celebration of art that will take place until February 28 of next year. It is a special edition since it marks the 40th anniversary of the first one. And the event's proposal is up to the task.
One of the most unique attractions is "Alienaciones del límites" (Alienations of the Limit). This is a collective exhibition that brings together 66 female visual artists, most of them born in Cuba.
The exhibition is made up of a total of 70 pieces. It includes oil paintings, performances, sculptures, audiovisuals, photographs and more. It was inaugurated on November 25 and will be available for a month at the National Office of Industrial Design in Havana.
The keys to the exhibition
The role of women is evident. "Alienaciones del límites" (Alienations of the Limit) brings together female visual artists from different generations, social classes, ethnicities, backgrounds and more.
Each one works with her own techniques, her elements, her supports, and has her own artistic discourse. What unites them is their own condition as women artists and the search to conquer social spaces through art.
The collective exhibition addresses the issue of women's art in society. How discipline facilitates women's access to different spaces, and also how it can hinder it.
The transformative power of female art
In “Alienaciones al límites” (Alienations to the Limit), art is positioned as an act of resistance. The authors question in their own way the limits imposed on women. And their works are a clear challenge to the norms.
The works presented show the transformative power of female art. Power that is inherent to art in general, but which in this case is powerfully expressed in the creations of women and in their fight against gender inequalities.
The pieces exhibited are also a response to gender stereotypes and canons of beauty. Each author has her own narrative in which she affirms her own uniqueness as a woman and as an artist.
Each of the creations is testimony to the action that is carried out in the face of awareness of limitations. The works stand out for their disruptive nature in relation to the power structures of society and the artistic field in particular. The artists
Alay Fuentes Bejerano, the curator of the collective exhibition, reveals that “Alienaciones…” features the presence of established figures and artists who are exhibiting for the first time.
The participation of Zaida del Río, one of the most important artists in Cuba and winner of the 2023 National Prize for Plastic Arts, stands out.
Most of the exhibitors are originally from Cuba. But there are also representatives from Argentina, Spain, France, Italy and Germany. One of them is Paloma Arma, a Spanish painter who thanked the invitation and expressed the need for women artists to communicate, express themselves and tell stories.
Dialogue and cooperation
The collective exhibition is the result of the work of Women’s Society, a project whose objective is to make women artists visible.
The intersectionality between the artists and their works is key to both the project and the exhibition. The meaning is not only found in the pieces themselves, but also in the dialogue that is generated between them.
The dialogue is also significant for the personal experience of each author. Cooperation between them stands out as a facilitating factor, which enables access to restricted areas and helps to break pre-established limits.
