A work by Joan Miró “Pictures (Women, Moon, Stars)”, from 1949, was sold in Paris for $21.95 million, becoming a record in France for this Spanish master of painting, announced the Christie's auction house. .

At the same auction, a work by the French sculptor François-Xavier Lalanne, “Le Rhinocrétaire I”, from 1964, was sold for 18.3 million euros, also a world record for this artist, reported the AFP news agency. .

Both works are the most expensive sold in France in 2023 in the artistic sector, according to Christie's.

Since its acquisition at the Maeght gallery in 1950, the iconic painting by Miró (1893-1983) has remained in the Colombe d'Or, a legendary inn located near Saint-Paul-de-Vence, in the southeast of France.

The total nightly sales of European avant-garde works, of which Miró's painting was the star, reached a total of 62.1 million euros.
