Exhibition Description
The Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of Chile opens its second period of exhibitions 2023 at its headquarters in Parque Forestal, with six individual and collective exhibitions. Continuing with the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the 1973 coup, the exhibitions link contemporary artistic practice with national history, proposing new perspectives and reflections.
Two and a half minutes to noon on September 11, 1973'. The work of Fernando Prats is determined by his relationship with nature and the territory, rooted in the links he establishes with Chile. Throughout his career, he has coined the term “pictorial geology”, which understands painting as a mobilizing agent, an active surface that works through layers that open up to new displacements. From these displacements arises the use of smoke, a fundamental element in his work, since it allows to capture the traces and pulsations of the paint.
Smoke is a sign that announces an event and has been used historically by cultures around the world, evoking memory, ritual, insurrection and catastrophes. The history of Chile is riddled with facts that, through smoke, make it possible to generate a political-symbolic story, from the native cultures to the recent revolt, and for his exhibition at MAC Parque Forestal, the artist presents the museum as a support in itself for the work in architectural, political, geographical and geological terms.
