Porto hosts ‘Art for Palestine’ and joins the collective cry for justice in support of the Palestinian cause

From May 1st to 3rd, the city of Porto hosts Art for Palestine and joins the collective cry for justice in support of the Palestinian cause, celebrating resilience through music, cinema, exhibitions and artistic workshops.

After two editions marked by the strength of art as a form of resistance, Art for Palestine comes to Porto for the first time. From May 1st to 3rd, the Mala Voadora, Amparo 99 and Passos Manuel spaces open their doors to host an intense program that combines multiple artistic languages with an urgent call for international solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The cinema opens its doors on May 1st, with the premiere of “Film for Palestine”, a strange audiovisual corpse created by Portuguese filmmakers and artists. Then, the screen gives voice to Palestinian childhood with a show of animated films made by children from Gaza. On May 2, the “Palestine Animated” session will feature short films in collaboration with the MPPM, followed by the documentary “Gaza.mp4” by Mohanad El Masri, Diaa Lagan and Fuad Halwani and a conversation with the directors. On May 3, the highlights will be “Arna’s Children” by Juliano Mer-Khamis, which will feature a moment of reflection after the screening, and “The Teacher” by Farah Nabulsi.

There will be space for several exhibitions that multiply perspectives and techniques, with highlights including the collective exhibition of the Solidarity Auction Art for Palestine, the exhibition “Illustrators for Peace in Palestine”, and also “Skateboarding is not a crime, genocide is”, on display at Amparo 99. Illustration as a form of resistance will also be the subject of debate, with the participation of members of the MPPM and artists represented in the exhibitions, followed by the presentation of the book “What light would you be reading?” by João Pedro Mésseder and Ana Biscaia

As for the musical program, many artists will come together to celebrate the diversity of voices and rhythms. On the 2nd, Samy Zeghmati and Frederica Vieira Campos (harp) will perform at Mala Voadora. On May 3rd, the shows and performances will take place between the auditorium and the Passos Manuel club, with Jamila Al-Yousef, Gil Mac and Henrique Ferrara, System Sophie, GAM, Peter Mor and Catarina Silva, Kaldvind and Septimal C, Lynce and Tendency.

As in previous editions, creative workshops are also back. Alexandre Esgaio will lead a zine workshop, while Tiago Robalo will be responsible for an origami workshop for children and the collective As Sentadas will be offering a sticker workshop.

On stage, theater and dance will give body to memory and denunciation. The highlights include the play “My Name is Rachel Corrie” by the company 100 Dramas, and “Malva” by Leonor Keil, a dance show with concerned participation.

For three days, the city of Porto will be transformed into a space for encounter, commitment and active participation. Through art — in its most diverse forms — we remind people that culture is also a trench, and that being with Palestine is an ethical and political choice. Admission is free, with an appeal for a donation in solidarity.
