Contemporary art in Latin America finds new forms of dialogue and interaction through initiatives that link artists, local communities and the natural environment. In this context, José Ignacio, Uruguay, becomes the epicenter of an ambitious cultural project that promises to transform the art scene in the region.
The renowned Tomás Redrado Art gallery began its artistic residency program this month, marking the beginning of a series of activities that will culminate with the grand opening of its new space on January 3, 2025.
The purpose of this initiative that will take place at Arthouse Hotel & Residences is, among others, to promote the exchange between the Uruguayan and international art scenes, and to generate an impact on Latin American contemporary art.
In the first half of 2025, artists Jessica Trosman, Paloma Teppa, Mariana Ferrari, Julia Retz, Benjamín Felice and Henry Palacio will participate.
The opening is scheduled for January 3, 2025, from 4 to 9 pm, with an exhibition by Trosman, the textile designer who has been delving into the field of sculpture for years.
Arthouse invites you to live in a constant state of inspiration. Its proposal is based on being immersed in art, finding depth and admiration in the everyday, and transforming life into a masterpiece. This space encourages people to create, contemplate, and elevate the ordinary into an experience of presence and sensitivity.
The program includes a gallery space and residencies designed for selected artists to develop artistic practices and research projects. Each residency will culminate in a project presented at the gallery. Selected artists will be chosen through a nomination and invitation process, and open calls with dates and requirements will be announced in the future through the gallery's official channels, such as its website, social media, and newsletter.
Since its creation in 2022, Tomás Redrado Art has been working with contemporary artists from Latin America, including representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. It also runs an art gallery already established in Miami, which is characterized by supporting artists to expand the boundaries of their artistic mediums. Among the works presented, sculptures that explore form, texture, and materiality stand out.
The program of the renowned Tomás Redrado Art gallery in José Ignacio will begin on January 3, 2025 with an exhibition by Jessica Trosman, followed by the exhibition of Paloma Teppa on February 1.
Mariana Ferrari will exhibit her work on April 7, and in December there will be an exhibition whose artist will be announced soon.
Meanwhile, the artistic residency program will begin on November 15, 2024 with Jessica Trosman, who will remain until December 1. Next, Paloma Teppa will occupy the residency from January 1 to 15, while Mariana Ferrari will do so between January 15 and February 15. Julia Retz will continue from February 15 to March 15, Benjamín Felice from April 1 to 30, Henry Palacio from May 1 to 30, and Charly Herrera from June 1 to 30.
The Uruguay headquarters will be located in a rural setting in José Ignacio, within a nature reserve comprising two hectares with 10,000 native trees and shrubs. The gallery will occupy a space of 60 square meters, while the residences will have an area of 55 square meters.
This environment integrates the works of art with the natural environment, promoting a dialogue between the two. The exterior design of the complex was conceived to stimulate creative thinking, incorporating elements that inspire the resident artists.
In 2025, Tomás Redrado Art will organize a series of monthly cultural events in different formats, with the purpose of energizing the cultural life of the town and fostering a link with the local community. The gallery will have four rotating exhibitions per year, focused on works that dialogue with nature. The pieces will be integrated into the environment so that it resonates within the works and vice versa.
The residency program in Uruguay includes a dedicated studio for artists to develop their work, allowing them to delve deeper into artistic practices and research that reflect the characteristics of the natural and cultural environment.
In addition, the gallery plans to open the residency program to curators, strengthening cultural exchanges and consolidating a bridge between the local and international art scenes.
