200 artists will pay an impressive tribute to Gabriel García Márquez

More than 200 Ibero-American artists will meet at the Teatro Solís in Montevideo with music, theater, poetry, cinema and conferences, paying homage to the Colombian Gabriel García Márquez (1927-2014) within the framework of "Macondo", a "cultural event" supported by the Gabo Foundation.

This was highlighted in the historic theater of the Uruguayan capital by the director of Culture of the Municipality of Montevideo, María Inés Obaldía, and the director of the Solís Theater in Montevideo, Malena Muyala, who explained what this meeting will consist of.

According to Obaldía, "Macondo" will consist of "a platform to honor the Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez that will have a central show and then a number of doors that will open for different artistic territories.

"It is an immersive experience paying homage in this case to García Márquez but which transcends the author himself, focusing above all on Latin American literature," the director of Culture stressed to the press. For his part, Muyala noted that, arising from an idea by the director of the National Comedy -stable theatrical cast from Montevideo-, Gabriel Calderón, the project had the challenge of "reflecting an artist of the dimension of García Márquez" who, he emphasized , "totally exceeds art" and "transforms".

This, she said, implied "a working network" together with different artistic bodies and local government departments and the search for support such as that of the Colombian Embassy in Uruguay and the Gabo Foundation.
According to the organizers, the Foundation created by the author who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982 will land in Montevideo with "a small version" of the Gabo Festival, which every year brings together more than 10,000 people in Bogotá, something that will happen like this outside of Colombia " for the first time in 11 years." On the other hand, during the presentation of "Macondo", named after the fictional town created by García Márquez in the famous novel "100 years of solitude", the theater director Marianella Morena, who co-directs the artistic project with the also Uruguayan Paula Villalba, anticipated how the experience will be.

The spectators will arrive at the Solís and as soon as they step on the esplanade the Macondo experience will begin and it is a journey that, although it is collective, is also designed for the individual, in the same way that when we read the book we have an intimate experience " , revealed.

There will be, among other spaces, a recreation of the bar "La Cueva", frequented by the author, and a children's corner or "Macondito". In addition to the central show, written by authors from Argentina, Spain, Cuba, Colombia and Bolivia, among other countries, there will be activities ranging from talks on journalism and culture, graphic arts and embroidery workshops, a poetry slam (recital), graphic arts exhibitions and even a gastronomic offer.
