Material Fair bets on art

The contemporary art fair Material will once again come to Mexico City from February 6 to 9, with the aim of being a space for exchange and exhibition of the most representative Latin American artistic production.

For this eleventh edition, to be held at Expo Reforma (Morelos 67, Juárez), 56% of the galleries are from Latin America, said Brett Schultz, creative director and co-founder of Material, in a conference.

“The deep commitment of the fair to the celebration of the energies of the region is underlined, while connections are being made with the rest of the world. In a reflection of how the current art of the continent evolves and captures more attention,” said Brett Schultz.

The selection committee for this edition is made up of Beatriz López, Christopher Rivera and Francisco Cordero-Ocejeda, who chose galleries from different latitudes, such as Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Paris, Oaxaca and Mexico City.

In addition, they highlighted the presence of Latin American art made by artists from New York and London. One of the aspects that stands out about Material is its support for young creators, since, Schultz explained, this event defends the struggle of young artists who want to enter the art market. “Material arose with a desire to create a fair that understands this struggle, that understands how difficult it is to create a market for new artists,” he added.

According to Schultz, on this occasion there will be a greater commitment to traditional art media, such as painting, sculpture and installation, but there will also be photography and video.

There will be two floors dedicated to showing the works presented by the 70 galleries and more than 200 artists from Mexico and the world. The 11th edition of Material prepared a program outside the walls of the main fair, which will present “Material Monday,” a tour of 14 participating galleries, with 18 exhibitions in a circuit through six neighborhoods of Mexico City.

Admission to Material costs 300 pesos, with a 50% discount for teachers, students and seniors. The full program can be found at https://material-fair.com/es/.
