Call for Venice Biennale 2024

Call for Venice Biennale 2024

The next edition of the prestigious Venice Biennale, which will celebrate its 60th international art meeting, will take place from April 20 to November 24, 2024.

Under the curatorship of Adriano Pedrosa, a renowned Brazilian curator, the central theme will revolve around the notion of the “foreigner.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship, through the Directorate of Cultural Affairs and the Argentine Agency for Investment and International Trade, has launched the open call for the Preliminary Project Competition in the field of Visual Arts for the Pavilion of Argentina at the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. This outstanding event will take place from April 20 to November 24, 2024.

You are invited to send preliminary projects by email before September 18, 2024 at 5 p.m. The jury will evaluate the curatorial concept and content, the proposed museography, adaptation to the space of the Argentine Pavilion, viability in terms of financing and logistical aspects. The bases and conditions of the contest, organized by the Argentine Foreign Ministry, can be consulted on the organization's official website.

The jury will be made up of outstanding personalities from the artistic and cultural field, such as Diana Saiegh, President of the National Endowment for the Arts; Claudia Lamas, Undersecretary of Heritage of the Province of Salta; Florencia Batitti, Executive Director of the Parque de la Memoria and President of the Argentine Association of Art Critics; Mónica Heller, artist responsible for the last submission of the 2022 Venice Biennale; Carina Cagnolo, curator and researcher at the University of Córdoba; Juan Usandivaras, Executive President of the Argentine Investment and International Trade Agency; and Paula Vázquez, Director of Cultural Affairs of the Foreign Ministry, who will act as president.

Argentine participation in this exhibition, considered one of the most prestigious artistic events worldwide, reflects the State's commitment to promoting our cultural production internationally.

It should be noted that in 2022, the artist Mónica Heller represented Argentina with her striking 3D video installation titled “The origin of the imported substance will matter the importance of the origin”, a project developed by Alejo Ponce de León that surprised the public with cross projections and lighting in a totally dark space.

The Venice Biennale, established in 1895, is one of the oldest and most prestigious art events in the world. Argentina participated for the first time in 1901. It is recognized as the most important international platform for contemporary art, providing the opportunity to exhibit works by foreign artists from around the world.

The general curator of the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, Adriano Pedrosa, has selected as the main theme “Stranieri Ovunque / Foreigners Everywhere / Extranjeros everywhere”. This theme explores the figure of the foreigner associated with the “outsider” who navigates between different worlds, sometimes forgotten due to their self-taught, popular, marginal or indigenous status.

The exhibition will also feature a core of works from Latin America, Africa, the Arab world and Asia of the 20th century, as well as a special section dedicated to the Italian artistic diaspora in the 20th century, highlighting Italian artists who traveled and developed their races in Africa, Asia, Latin America and other European countries.
