Miami becomes a great canvas in its art week

Several fairs and events coincide in Miami in the first week of December, where the Art Basel and Art Miami fairs stand out
Miami Art Week, from December 2 to 8, attracts artists, collectors, curators and art lovers in general, with events that seek to shake off the dust of the everyday and offer transgressive and attractive experiences, while Miami establishes itself as a cultural destination.
Art Basel Miami Beach

At the heart of Miami Art Week is Art Basel, considered the most prestigious art fair on the continent. From December 6 to 8, the Miami Beach Convention Center will be the stage where more than 280 international galleries will present works by established and emerging artists. Art Basel Miami Beach, in its 22nd edition, arrives with a strong representation of Latin American art, and with avant-garde pieces that explore themes such as sustainability and technology.

As Bridget Finn, director of Art Basel in Miami Beach, put it, they have “an exceptional list of galleries” that come “from all corners of America, Europe and Asia.” Regarding the selection of galleries, she said: “It was incredibly important that we chart a more equitable path for the participation of small and medium-sized galleries entering the main section of this exhibition, and the proof is in the extraordinary number of new additions that join this edition.”
Art Miami and Context Art Miami

At One Herald Plaza, the sister fairs Art Miami and CONTEXT Art Miami, from December 3 to 8, showcase modern and contemporary works of museum quality, as well as pieces by emerging talents and more accessible to collectors. Here there is room for new technologies, digital art and photography, all in a dynamic environment that becomes a work of art in itself.

Art Miami, now in its 34th edition, is the city’s oldest and original contemporary and modern art fair, bringing this year more than 160 galleries from cities such as London, Tokyo, Paris, Brussels, Bogotá, Seoul, Tel Aviv, Hong Kong and across the United States.
Nick Korniloff, Executive Vice President and Director of Art Miami Fairs, said: “Art Miami has always been a vibrant platform for artistic expression. I am more excited than ever to see how our galleries, artists and collectors will interact with the diverse creative talents that make this event truly special.”

Meanwhile, the CONTEXT Art Miami fair, in its twelfth edition, will showcase works by 73 galleries from more than 19 countries. “This year’s fair will be a platform for both discovery and dialogue, where collectors and art enthusiasts will be able to interact with innovative works that reflect the changing landscape of the global art scene,” said Julián Navarro, Director of CONTEXT Art Miami.
More events and street art

Beyond the previous fairs, the popular areas of Wynwood and Design District will be activated with many complementary events. The famous Wynwood Walls will be dressed up with new works by urban artists, while in the Design District there will be exhibitions in luxury galleries and fashion shows.

The must-see place is Wynwood, an attractive urban art center whose main artery, Northwest 2nd Avenue, is an open-air gallery with treasures of graffiti and street art. A tempting proposal is the Wynwood Pop-Up Show on December 7 and 8.

In addition, the photoMIAMI fair (December 8 and 9) is also taking place in that area. It is considered the only fair focused solely on photography and will be held at The Miami Art Week Gallery: 2300 N. Miami Ave. Miami, FL 33127.

Special mention should be made of the AfriKin art fair, which this year celebrates its 10th edition, with the theme "Threads of life in fragments of time," from December 1 to 8 at Maison AfriKin, Scott Galvin Community Center in North Miami. This is an interesting contemporary African art fair that offers a cultural immersion in the world of Africa, from visual arts, music and gastronomy.

Pay attention to the Spectrum Miami and Red Dot Miami fairs, which return to their usual space at the MANA Wynwood Convention Center, from December 4 to 8, with more than 150,000 square feet inhabited by visual arts.

On the other hand, fairs such as Scope Miami Beach, Untitled Art and NADA (New Art Dealers Alliance) will bring a fresh perspective, with an emphasis on disruptive and collaborative art practices. In addition, several local institutions, such as the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and the Museum of Contemporary Art of North Miami (MOCA), will present special exhibitions throughout the week.
Art is in life

Miami Art Week is not just about visual art and galleries. The art week canvas expands to an entire cultural lifestyle that includes experiences in luxury hotels such as the Faena and the Edition, fashion shows, happenings in the streets, events and special menus in restaurants and bars, exclusive parties and sensory activities that combine art and gastronomy.

It is worth highlighting the importance of the influx of visitors to the city: it is estimated that more than 80,000 people will attend. This, in addition to enriching cultural life, activates the local economy with income in sectors of tourism, lodging, services, gastronomy, among others.
