During 2023, more than one million people visited the 51 exhibitions that Fomento Cultural Citibanamex organized, both in its cultural headquarters, located in Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende, Mérida and Durango, and in other venues nationally and internationally. .
Among the most notable are those presented at its operational headquarters, the Citibanamex Cultural Palace – Palacio de Iturbide, in the historic center of Mexico City: Urban Transformation. Sordo Madaleno Architects; Screens and castes. Secular painting in New Spain; Architectural heritage of the National Bank of Mexico. Viceregal and contemporary buildings; Teodora Blanco/María Izquierdo. Perceptions of beauty; and Births. Art and tradition. In addition, for the first time an Altar of the Dead was set up in homage to the Great Masters of Popular Art, which managed to receive more than 2,000 visitors daily and two exhibitions-sales of popular art were organized, around the exhibitions titled Stories told. . San Agustín Oapan and Xalitla, Guerrero; and Of capes, ruanas and more…
In total, Fomento Cultural presented 12 exhibitions throughout 2023 at the Iturbide Palace, which received more than 400 thousand visitors and were accompanied by an editorial program, educational services and academic development around the topics presented.
Regarding the exhibitions that were presented in the Stately Homes of the National Bank of Mexico (Casa del Mayorazgo de la Canal, Museo Casa Montejo and Palacio del Conde del Valle de Súchil), those of Atlas also stand out. Together, the three Manor Houses received more than 380 thousand visitors and maintained a permanent and free cultural and educational offer throughout the year.
At the national level, Fomento Cultural collaborated with various institutions and allies to bring its exhibition projects to other audiences. An example of these collaborations are the exhibitions of Goya's Los Caprichos at the International Baroque Museum in Puebla; Great Masters of Mexican Popular Art, 20 years at the Veracruz State Art Museum, in the city of Orizaba; and Screens and castes. Profane painting in New Spain at the Conde Rul Museum in Guanajuato.
The exhibitions of the Popular Art Collection of Fomento Cultural Citibanamex also stand out: the Births were presented at the Basilica and Coyoacán stations of the Metro Collective System of Mexico City and the permanent exhibitions of the Great Masters of Popular Art in various venues such as the Juan Beckmann Gallardo Cultural Center; the Izamal Cultural Center; the Mayan World Textile Center; or the Museum of Popular Art of Yucatán, which will change its headquarters and will be inaugurated in 2024 in a new room of the Great Museum of the Mayan World.
At the international level, Fomento Cultural presented the Flor Garduño exhibitions. The construction of the moment and his popular art collection at the Casa de México in Spain. Furthermore, in March 2023 he managed to include pieces by the Great Masters of Mexican Popular Art in Christie's Latin American art auction in New York, thus recognizing the quality of master craftsmen as true contemporary artists.
Another important achievement of the Popular Art Support Program in 2023 includes collaboration with Fonart and the state Craft Houses. Cultural Fomento contributed 3.1 million pesos to the prize pool of 13 contests, in which 5,406 artisans from 305 communities in the country registered and 935 artisans were awarded.
In 2024, Citibanamex, the National Bank of Mexico, will turn 140 years old and to celebrate it will carry out various events, such as the inauguration of the Casa del Diezmo in Morelia as one of the Bank's Stately Homes; of a branch in Oaxaca in a Porfirian mansion that will have a space for exhibitions, and of the Casa Montejo annex in Mérida. It will present various exhibitions in its different cultural venues in the country, including a traveling popular art exhibition.
In the spring of 2024, the Citibanamex Cultural Palace – Palacio de Iturbide, will present the exhibition Atlas by the Mexican artist of Dutch origin Jan Hendrix, which will bring together recently produced pieces made especially to coexist with the architecture of the viceregal courtyard of this enclosure.
It will also carry out the third edition of the photography contest El México de los Mexicanos, will publish one more volume of the series The Values of Mexicans, which began in 1986, and will present to the public the new editions of The Painting Collection of the National Bank of Mexico in its volumes: viceregal, 19th century and 20th century, as well as a revised edition of The architecture of the National Bank of Mexico. Finally, it will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Citibanamex Anastasio G. Saravia Prize for Regional Mexican History.
Since its creation in 1971, Fomento Cultural Citibanamex has had the vision of being a recognized example of a private company that promotes the culture of Mexico with leadership, through innovative actions and in accordance with the needs of the country and the National Bank of Mexico. In this new year, it will continue working to promote investment in cultural development, as well as promote, preserve and disseminate Mexican culture.
