This exhibition Contemporary Characters in the Pen of Oswaldo Sagástegui aims to show drawing as more than a minor art and give it the outstanding value it deserves.

It presents us with the story told through the eyes of this artist, born in Huánuco in 1936, who studied at the School of Fine Arts of Peru as part of the famous "Gold Promotion" and then embarked on a journey that took him through Rome, New York and finally Mexico.

And it is in the Aztec country where he was lucky enough to be a spectator of many world milestones that, through his work as a caricaturist developed for more than 30 years, he managed to recreate a vision of everything that happened.

Sagástegui's creative work as a caricaturist has been in constant activity, from the 1968 Olympics and the Tlatelolco student movements to the end of the 20th century, passing through the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the various actors who were present. in these historical events, recording the news that the entire world witnessed.

Due to his originality and artistic quality, he was chosen as one of the most influential caricaturists of the century, according to the book Sammlung Karicaturen & Cartoons.

Sagástegui has been a companion of important figures for Latin America, such as Octavio Paz, Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Juan Acha, José Luis Cuevas, among others.

“Oswaldo Sagastegui's work has always maintained a link with us and the characters that are part of our Latin American history, preserving that analytical spirit that only great artists deliver, managing to contextualize an entire situation with a single image, always accompanied by a degree with exact humor so that it does not become a joke or a parody,” says Igor Bernaola, curator of the exhibition that can be visited until March 8.

The Kuelap room is located at Av. Javier Prado Este 2465, San Borja from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
