Exhibition on the loneliness of black women

Exhibition at Palácio das Artes brings together works by artists from Minas Gerais reflecting the loneliness of black women in spaces of power

MINAS GERAIS, Belo Horizonte - The power of artists from Minas Gerais comes together with a variety of languages and media to talk about a theme that transcends artistic representations, in the next visual arts exhibition at the Palácio das Artes

The Government of Minas Gerais, through the State Secretariat of Culture and Tourism (Secult) and the Clóvis Salgado Foundation (FCS), presents the exhibition I want to love those who light a fire with me at 7 am, curated by the artist and researcher Flaviana Lasan. The exhibition takes place at Galeria Arlinda Corrêa Lima from October 7th to January 14th, 2024.

With almost 50 works by 11 contemporary artists, the exhibition focuses on the affective and social loneliness and ancestry of black women, through paintings, engravings (some with materials and supports such as bean water, banana stain, earth and cardboard), pieces ceramics, audiovisual records and other resources. Entry to the Gallery is free, and the exhibition has free rating. Galeria Arlinda Corrêa Lima is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 9:30 am to 9 pm, and on Sundays, from 5 pm to 9 pm.

The exhibition proposal was activated based on personal experiences and conversations lived by the curator, involving non-belonging and the absence of representations of black women in spaces of power. Other inspirations came from encounters with the album Bom even é ser underwater, by Bahian singer Luedji Luna, with the writing of Conceição Evaristo from Minas Gerais and with the book Letters to my grandmother, by philosopher Djamila Ribeiro.

The title of the exhibition evokes issues such as women's desires, freedom of choice, work dynamics and also the joint fight against racism – symbolized here by the bonfire, and also present in the exhibition, which will show signs of charring. “In this title I induce an affective movement, but it also deals with state powers and dignified living conditions for black women”, summarizes Flaviana Lasan.
