Meet Patricio Campillo, Latin American designer shortlisted for the LVMH Prize in 2024
The designer brings Charro culture to his namesake brand and updates Latin American aesthetics in the US creative scene
With the phrase "Gulf of Mexico" printed on his T-shirt, Patricio Campillo closed his show at New York Fashion Week this month. By highlighting his country's territory, the designer not only performed a patriotic act, but also a political one, since the region has been the target of US President Donald Trump, who said he would change the name to "Gulf of America".
Latin pride accompanies the designer in his own way, that is: strong influence from the charro culture, a movement built by Mexican cowboys in the 19th century, contemporary Mexican art and fond memories from his childhood. In the recently launched collection, he blends these pillars with magical realism to update charro tailoring, in which codes linked to masculinity gain a sensual, modern and poetic breath.
