Lugar Não Lugar: the art of Goiás on the international scene
Artists from Goiás (Brazil), Bruno Bernardi, Evandro Soares, Gerson Fogaça and Pitágoras Lopes open exhibition in Belgium

On October 19, 2023, four artists from Goiás, Bruno Bernardi, Evandro Soares, Gerson Fogaça and Pitágoras Lopes, will present the exhibition “Lugar Não Lugar” in the Cultural space of the Brazilian Embassy in Brussels, Belgium. This exhibition represents yet another notable incursion of art from Goiás onto the international scene.

This exhibition is the result of a project supported by the Art and Culture Fund, a program of the Government of Goiás administered by the State Secretariat for Culture (Secult).

The exhibition includes 32 works of different formats and techniques, covering photographs (by Bernardi), paintings (by Lopes and Fogaça) and photography/installation (by Soares). The curatorship is in charge of the renowned Venezuelan Morella Jurado, while the production is signed by Malu da Cunha, also from Goiás. A delegation of representatives from Goiás is ready to travel to Brussels to monitor the installation and opening ceremony of the exhibition.

It is worth noting that the exhibition “Lugar Não Lugar” has already had a notable international tour, visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas, Venezuela, in 2018. This museum is widely recognized in Latin America for its valuable collection of modern and contemporary art. The selection of “Lugar Não Lugar” for exhibition in this prestigious location was an achievement achieved through the Council of the Foundation of the National Museums of Venezuela and was part of the programming of the II Bienal del Sur.

In the words of curator Morella Jurado: “The exhibition presents us with a singular collective perspective on the concept of “Non-Place” defined by anthropologist Marc Augé, who describes it as an interchangeable space where the human being remains anonymous. From this enigmatic and challenging concept, these four creators, each with their own unique approach and artistic expression, through photography, drawing, painting and installation, highlight these empty spaces of content and image, while taking us to reflect on the importance of the polis as a conscious way of inhabiting, as a way of living far from utilitarianism. “Lugar Não Lugar” invites us to revisit urban spaces with a critical and admired eye.”

Originally scheduled to take place in 2021, the “Lugar Não Lugar” exhibition had to be postponed due to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, which affected museums and cultural spaces around the world.
