First International Biennial of Mail Art

First International Biennial of Mail Art

First International Biennial of Mail Art: A Cultural Connection in Two Nations
The Biennial’s participants include artists from the National Committees of several Latin American countries
The RELAC - Regional Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean of the International Association of Visual Arts (AIAP) announces the holding of the First International Biennial of Mail Art. The initiative comes in response to the success of art events previously organized in Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Brazil, reinforcing AIAP’s mission to promote cultural cooperation and strengthen the activity of artists in diverse contexts. This event stands out not only for its artistic proposal, but also for its symbolic importance, celebrating 190 years of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Mexico.

The Biennial will be held simultaneously in two locations: in Brazil, at the Postal Museum in Brasília, and in Mexico, at the Quinta Estação dos Correios, Museu do Palácio Postal. In Brazil, the exhibition will open on September 25, 2024, with a lecture by curator Prof. Dr. Oscar D’Ambrosio and the launch of a commemorative postage stamp. This ceremony marks the beginning of a long-term project that aims to expand the reach of Mail Art in Latin America and beyond, providing a platform for artists of different nationalities and backgrounds.
The Biennial participants include artists from the National Committees of several Latin American countries, such as Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica and Venezuela, among others. Guest artists from Argentina, Cuba and Guadeloupe Island will also be featured, as well as representatives from the World Executive Committees of Korea, Poland, Serbia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Latvia, Germany, Japan and the United States. This rich diversity promises to generate a vibrant cultural exchange, allowing different artistic visions to meet and dialogue.
Postal Art, a form of artistic expression that uses correspondence and objects sent through the mail as a medium of exchange, is a powerful tool for the democratization of art. This Biennial is a unique opportunity for artists and spectators to connect, reflecting on contemporary issues and the importance of cultural exchange. As the world becomes increasingly globalized, initiatives such as the First International Mail Art Biennial reaffirm the role of art as a link between nations and cultures, fostering meaningful dialogues and a deeper understanding of the diverse realities that make up our society.
