Christmas exhibition “Art and Hope” in Peru

Inmates exhibit pieces of ceramics, paintings and other artistic expressions at the “Art and Hope” Christmas exhibition

Discover the creativity and resilience of inmates from various prisons in Lima at the "Art and Hope" Christmas expo, an initiative of the Human Dignity and Solidarity Association.

Inmates from various prisons in Lima reveal their extraordinary talent at the “Art and Hope” Christmas expo, organized by the Human Dignity and Solidarity Association. From December 15 to 30, at the ICPNA Venancio Shinki Space in Miraflores, works of ceramics, leather and painting created behind bars are presented as unique and meaningful gifts.

These artistic expressions, forged in an environment of resilience, not only stand out for their beauty and quality, but also represent a tangible testimony of the transformative power of art in lives deprived of freedom. Each piece is an opportunity to support the rehabilitation of these unique artists and offer gifts that carry a message of hope this holiday season.

Under the support of the National Penitentiary Institute, the “Art and Hope” exhibition comes to life thanks to the joint efforts of the inmates. Carlos Álvarez Osorio, director of the Human Dignity and Solidarity Association, highlights the decisive impact that this support has had on the initiative, making this exhibition a significant channel for expression and change.

The writer Leslie Guevara invites us to overcome prejudices: «If you give yourself something this Christmas, let it be the opportunity to look beyond. Not everything that comes from prison is gloomy. Dare to see the person. This message highlights the importance of appreciating art without labels, a lesson that these works invite us to reflect on.

For 28 years, “Art and Hope” has been a beacon of change inside and outside of Peruvian prisons, demonstrating that art, even behind bars, can transform lives. Founded by Father Hubert Lanssiers, the Human Dignity and Solidarity Association continues to be an essential catalyst in providing inmates with a means of expression, personal development, and financial support for their families.
