Material Fair vol. 11: the quintessential Latin American art gathering returns
The Material Fair 2025 returns with two floors full of exhibitions, cultural dialogues and meetings between art lovers, curators and collectors.
At this point, it is undeniable that the Material Fair is a meeting point between art lovers, curators, collectors and the general public interested in the latest trends in the industry. And it is no coincidence, since its creation in front of the Covadonga cantina, the fair has established itself as an unmissable event not only to discover the work of already recognized artists but also to promote regional talent.
This year, Material returns to Expo Reforma to present various Latin American artists in Mexico City who are making a name for themselves. Are you ready for Art Week 2025? From February 6 to 9, 2025, the Material Fair will feature 71 exhibitors from 18 countries and 35 cities. In addition, this year there will be 24 new exhibitors who will undoubtedly contribute to the conversation around the trends that are leaving their mark on the art world.
What does the Material Fair vol. 11 offer?
In its eleventh edition, the Material Fair will continue the tradition of hosting various exhibitions on the two floors of the Expo Reforma. In them, it will be possible to find not only conventional galleries but also independent contemporary art projects from the main Latin American cities and countries. In fact, among the voices that will join Material this year are Albarrán Bourdais, from Madrid; Galería Sendros, from Buenos Aires; and Espacio Continuo, from Bogotá.
As a preamble to the official activities of the Material Fair 2025, Material Monday will be held on February 3. This event consists of a special route through various independent spaces and more than 12 galleries that open their doors simultaneously, from 4 to 8 pm, for all those who want to discover the exhibitions and the artists they offer.
The Material Fair is not only about observing and experiencing art, but is also an opportunity to support contemporary art organizations in Mexico. Therefore, the fair's flagship program, Proyectos, continues to be a free exhibition space in the company of a mentor and specialized workshops both in Mexico City and in Guadalajara, one of the places with the most emerging art projects in the country.
Another of the activities within the framework of the Material Fair 2025 is the performance program, IMMATERIAL. This year, the exhibition of Angela Goh, an Australian artist, will be held at the Museo Experimental el Eco, on February 6 and 7 at 8 pm and 12 pm. Titled Body Loss, this exhibition explores themes such as transformation and absence, through a poetic reflection on the loss and reimagining of the body.
In addition, the International Visitors Program Forum will be held at the Tamayo Museum, whose objective is to bring together curators and contemporary art professionals in dialogue tables on artistic practices in Latin America. This event will be part of an important collaboration with Salón ACME, UDEM and the Roberto Garza Sada Center for Art, Architecture and Design.
Although Latin American art is the main focus of the Material Fair, exhibitors also come from other countries. This year, Material is proud to present artists from the United States and Canada (21% of exhibitors), as well as the European Union and the United Kingdom (23%). In this way, the Material Fair consolidates itself as a platform that catapults the region to international horizons.
The best of art from the Americas
Bringing together the best of Latin American art is no easy task; it requires a specialized eye and a lot of care. That is why, thanks to this year's Material Fair committee — made up of Beatriz López (Vision Institute, Bogotá / New York), Christopher Rivera (EMBAJADA, San Juan) and Francisco Cordero-Oceguera (Lodos, Mexico City) — projects with a deep connection to Latin America were selected.
In this sense, Hannah Hoffmann, an artist from Los Angeles, presents the Venezuelan Luz Carabaño; David Peter Francis, a native of New York, presents the Mexican artist Gonzalo Reyes Rodríguez; or Povos, from Chicago, presents Isabella Mellado, who comes from Puerto Rico.
