A record number of Argentine galleries will participate in Art Basel Miami in December

While interest in Latin America grows internationally, as demonstrated by the recent edition of the Venice Biennale – open to the public until November – Argentine art continues to attract global attention. A record number of Argentine galleries are preparing to participate in December in Art Basel Miami, one of the most important contemporary art fairs. A work by the Argentine duo Chiachio & Giannone, hand-embroidered with cotton and wool threads on canvas, was chosen by the fair's organizers as the featured image in their latest press release, in which they announced the highlights of the 2024 edition, which will be held from December 6 to 8 in Miami Beach.
This textile work by the duo Leo Chiachio and Daniel Giannone reflects on the self-exoticization of Latin American art on the international contemporary scene. It is a unique and unconventional self-portrait of their family, within a jungle landscape that reflects a meticulous study of Argentine vegetation.
In total, six Argentine galleries will participate in the fair, including Barro, Isla Flotante, Jorge Mara La Ruche, Piedras, Rolf Art and the aforementioned Ruth Benzacar.
A record number
"It is a record year for Argentine galleries admitted to Art Basel Miami," Leopol Mones Cazón, director of Isla Flotante, told Clarín Cultura. This year, for the first time, it will be in the main section of the fair with works by Valentina Liernur, Valentín Demarco and Mariela Scafati. In addition, Isla Flotante is part of the Selection Committee for the Nova and Positions sections in 2024, along with galleries from Los Angeles and New York.
Barro, which returns to the main section, will present works by Mondongo, La Chola Poblete —winner of an Honorable Mention at the Venice Biennale—, Lucrecia Lionti and Joaquín Boz, while the Jorge Mara La Ruche gallery will exhibit pieces by Sarah Grilo, Ana Sacerdote, Kazuya Sakai, Alfredo Hlito, Eduardo Stupía and León Ferrari at its stand.
For its part, Benzacar will travel with works by Eduardo Basualdo, Jorge Macchi, Roberto Aizenberg, Mariana Telleria, Liliana Porter, Carlos Huffmann and Chiachio & Giannone.
The Piedras gallery will debut at the fair with a solo show by Jimena Croceri, an artist from Cutral-Có who explores the flexibility between gestures and rituals through performance, objects, video, drawing and writing. Her work will be exhibited in the "Positions" section, dedicated to young and emerging artists.
Also in "Positions" will be Rolf Art, with an audiovisual installation by Julieta Tarraubella entitled "The Secret Life of Flowers", a "cyber-garden" that explores the performative side of the metamorphosis of flowers. In addition, Rolf will participate in the Meridians section –along with other large-scale projects– with a monumental frame by the Peruvian artist Roberto Huarcaya, from the series Amazograms (2014–2024), whose theme is the grandeur and fragility of the Amazon rainforest, the central work of the Peruvian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
"This is our third consecutive participation in Art Basel Miami Beach, with two parallel proposals," said Florencia Giordana Braun, director of Rolf Art, in statements to Clarín Cultura.
Latin American art scene
Art Basel Miami has long been paying attention to the growing Latin American art scene, something that has also been highlighted recently by international museum directors such as Max Hollein of the Met and Kim Conaty of the Whitney, who have spoken out in favor of including more art from the region in their collections.
This year, the fair will feature 283 galleries from 38 countries that will present the best of contemporary art, including painting, sculpture, installations, photography, video and new media in its six sectors: Galleries (main sector), Kabinett, Nova, Positions, Survey and Meridians.
