International Biennial of Contemporary Art of South America

Bienalsur landed in Madrid with the ideological power of Latin American art

The fourth edition of the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of South America inaugurated the exhibition “Between us and the others: Together Apart” at the Casa de América in the Spanish capital

From Madrid. On a very rainy Thursday night in the Spanish capital (already dressed to the nines to wait for Christmas), the opening of the exhibition Between Us and the Others: Together Apart presented by Bienalsur in one of the rooms of the Casa de América was set. (in front of the Cibeles fountain, an urban icon of the city), and open to the public from this Friday, December 1 until February 9, 2024.

With this inauguration in Madrid, another stage is completed in the route of the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of the South, generated by the National University of Tres de Febrero and which in this fourth edition traces an ambitious route of 18,370 km, from Buenos Aires and even Tokyo.

Between us and the others (a powerful title for its no less powerful content) brings together 24 artists of 11 nationalities who created their works on the idea of “border” thinking to transmit a message under the format of contemporary art. Forced migration -due to economic and social circumstances-, the border as a metaphor for separation, the emotional ups and downs generated by the decision to leave the native homeland and at the same time, the search for new opportunities permeate the content of the works.

The exhibition integrates explicit photographs, installations, videos and posters made by Venezuelans Adrián Preciado, Iván Candeo and Carmen Ludene; the Colombians Antonio Caro, Angie Jácome, Daniel Arévalo, Juan Carvajal, MO Colectivo (Mariam Abrajim and Octavio Salazar), Nicolás Cadavid, Wilmer Useche, Yosman Botero, Sergio Duran “Bayo” and Samir Quintero; the Brazilian Anna Bella Geiger, the Mexicans Betsabée Romero, Pablo Helguera and Teresa Margolles, the Peruvians Daniela Ortiz and Gilda Mantilla, the Canadian Giuliana Racco, the Cuban Glenda León, the Colombian-Spanish Raimond Chaves, the Bolivian-German Verena Melgarejo and the Argentines Marcelo Brodsky and Pablo Cohen. The exhibition is curated by Diana Wechsler (artistic director of Bienalsur); Alex Brahim (creator of the Together Apart project); and Benedetta Casini (curator of Bienalsur).
