"Turning Heads: Bruegel, Rubens and Rembrandt" at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts (Antwerp, Belgium)

Vermeer - 'Girl with the Red Hat' (1664-67)National Gallery of Art

After the pioneering and record-breaking Vermeer exhibition at the Rijksmuseum, Antwerp's Royal Museum of Fine Arts is now shifting focus. This time, it not only focuses on the works of the Dutch master himself, but also on a distinct group that includes renowned artists such as Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. This collection focuses on the emergence of a new artistic genre, the study of the head. During the 17th century, interest in "tronie", an archaic Dutch term meaning "face", increased. "Turning Heads" at KMSKA brings together an impressive array of 76 exquisite masterpieces, drawn from Belgian and international collections, all centered on this theme. The exhibition promises to take viewers on a journey through the evolution of the tronie genre, from the beginning of the 15th century to the 19th century.

"Turning Heads: Bruegel, Rubens and Rembrandt" opens on October 20, 2023 and runs until January 21, 2024.

Curious to know how iconic British painter David Hockney could capture the likeness of Harry Styles on canvas? His curiosity is about to be satisfied with the next major exhibition opening at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Other portraits on display in “Drawing from Life” will be of Hockney’s late mother, Laura Hockney; fashion designer Celia Birtwell; curator and former artist companion Gregory Evans; and several people from the local Normandy community. This exhibition had already been presented at the National Portrait Gallery for 20 days in 2020, but was postponed due to the pandemic. In addition to the 33 new works, there will also be colored pencil drawings created by Hockney in Paris in the early 1970s, as well as a selection of drawings from the 1980s, when the artist created a self-portrait every day for two months.

"David Hockney: Drawing from Life" opens on November 2, 2023 and runs until January 21, 2024.

"Claude Gillot - Comedies, fables & arabesques" at the Louvre Museum (Paris, France)

Claude Gillot - 'Pantomime scene: Harlequin spirit wisp Museu do Louvre / Grand Palais / Suzanne Nagy

French artist Claude Gillot was a "jack of all trades", excelling in several disciplines, including painting, metal engraving and theater design. Under the guidance of Jean-Antoine Watteau, Gillot developed his artistic abilities. However, it was his fanciful rococo designs that truly captured the admiration of the Parisian bourgeoisie. At the center of his artistic work is a substantial collection of drawings that testify to his fascination with the comic essence of Italian Comedy, characterized by pantomimes, acrobatics and transvestite figures. One of the upcoming exhibitions at the prestigious Louvre Museum constitutes the most ambitious tribute ever dedicated to Gillot, covering around 90 of his works. This exhibition not only presents the Louvre's current and most extensive collection of Gillot pieces, but also features loans from prestigious institutions such as the Morgan Library & Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Royal Library of Belgium and the Museum of Art.

"Claude Gillot - Comedies, fables & arabesques" opens on November 9, 2023 and runs until February 12, 2024.
