Latin American artists at the Material Vol. 11 Fair

Latin American artists at the Material Vol. 11 Fair

Material celebrates its 11th edition from February 6 to 9 with a record number of Latin American artists and galleries.
Every year, at the beginning of February, artists, curators, collectors and art enthusiasts visit Mexico City to experience its art week. Among the various activities, Feria Material Vol. 11 stands out, a fair dedicated to the promotion of modern art and which brings together projects from different parts of the world to generate conversation about art.

This year, Feria Material Vol. 11 begins a new decade celebrating its eleventh edition at Expo Reforma. Continuing with its work, this modern art fair brings together 72 exhibitors from 20 countries and 35 different cities. This occasion stands out for the large number of artists and galleries from Latin America, representing 56% of the total offering that can be found throughout the two floors that house this fair.

The Latin representation in this edition began with the Selection Committee, in which Beatriz López, from the Instituto de Visión Bogotá/New York, Christopher Rivera, from EMBAJADA in San Juan and Francisco Cordero-Oceguera de Lodos in Mexico City participated. Some of the international galleries that do not belong to the region even sought to bring artists who have a relationship with Latin America.
For example, Hannah Hoffman from Los Angeles, who represents the Venezuelan artist Luz Carabaño. On the other hand, David Peter Francis from New York included the Mexican Gustavo Reyes Rodríguez in his selection. DES BAINS from London counts among its representatives the Venezuelan artist Lucia Farrow and Povos from Chicago the Puerto Rican Isabella Mellado.
What can't you miss from Feria Material Vol. 11?

With the help of Baby Solís from Obras de Artes Comentadas, we visited the fair to learn about some of the proposals by Latino artists at Feria Material Vol. 11. It is worth noting that for many of these artists, this is the first time they have performed outside their country of origin.
Cerámica Suro is a ceramics workshop that also materializes the work of various artists in this technique. For this edition of Feria Material Vol. 11, they are presenting the works Nostalgia and Objetos perdidos by Chilean artist Camila Pino Gay. These are a series of pieces made of modeled porcelain. The first replicates stationery items such as pencils and erasers. The second is a series of objects contained in a small box.
The Mexican artist Adela Goldbard created a piece in wool felt from her series Nochixtlán in collaboration with Marcela Ortega. This work is in the Proxyco gallery in New York and is inspired by the events arising from the repression of a demonstration in 2016. Parents and teachers were attacked by police forces and resulted in a series of buses set on fire on the side of the road. The vestiges of this event remained there as a kind of anti-monument that later starred in a promotional video for the Guelaguetza in that region. The image that seems fictional is actually a faithful portrait of a part of said video.

Salón Silicón comes to this edition of Feria Material Vol. 11 and among its represented artists is the Argentine Ángela Ferrari. For this occasion, the selected piece is Sobre garzas y unidades and depicts a heron and vegetal elements such as flowers on a screen. The piece results in a screen depicted with this postcard in cherry wood.
The Más Allá gallery in Bogotá presents Encuentra gluten by the artist Henry Palacio. Here the word hello stands out in a lighter tone compared to its background. As you get closer to the work, you can see that this is actually a void caused by the absence of alphabet soup pieces that repeat the word “lorem ipsum.”

Finally, Paseolab comes from Peru with three compatriot artists, among which Verovcha stands out. Through geometric and colorful landscapes, it takes up the Andean worldview and counterculture of the 1960s. The result is a series of playful pieces that invite us to abandon the romantic vision of the construction that exists about that culture.
