National Visual Arts Salon: registration period opened for jury members

This 112th edition will award 33 prizes for $31,000,000 in 10 categories and up to 8 awards for Artistic Career.
The National Secretariat of Culture, headed by Leonardo Cifelli, announces the call for the 112th Edition of the National Visual Arts Salon and the National Award for Artistic Career (corresponding to 2024) that will be held by the Palais de Glace.

The first stage of the call is intended for the application of jurors that will take place until March 23, while the registration of artists will be enabled from April 14 to May 11. See the complete schedule here.

The National Visual Arts Salon is the oldest competition in the country, which is held uninterruptedly in Argentine territory and awards the most representative works of contemporary art in the country.

This edition has the novelty of incorporating the category "Design" which joins "Fire Arts", "Drawing", "Sculpture", "Photography", "Graphics", "Installations and Alternative Media", "Painting", "Textile" and "Non-Disciplinary Space".

“In an economic context that demands austerity and efficiency in the administration of resources, the realization of a new edition of the National Salon of Visual Arts is an achievement that reaffirms our commitment to culture and its value as an emblem of Argentina at the national and international level. This award, with a long history and prestige, has been able to adapt to the demands of Argentines, who demand responsibility in the use of public funds. With effort and changes aimed at guaranteeing its sustainability, we have worked to preserve this fundamental space for the recognition and promotion of artistic talent, fulfilling the duty of caring for the cultural and economic heritage of all”*, said the Secretary of Culture of the Nation.

The National Visual Arts Salon Awards recognize the three best works in the categories known as acquisition awards, as they become part of the Palais de Glace art collection. The First Best Work is awarded $3,000,000 million pesos; the Second Best Work $2,000,000, and the Third Best Work $1,500,000. In addition, each of the ten categories that make up the Salon receives three awards. These are non-acquisition awards of $1,000,000 for the first, $800,000 for the second, and $600,000 for the third.

The National Award for Artistic Career awards up to eight living Argentine artists, native or naturalized, over 60 years of age, who must also apply. Those who win the award receive a lifetime pension equivalent to five minimum retirements and must donate up to five relevant works of their production to the Ministry of Culture, one of which, chosen by the Jury, will become part of the heritage of the National Museum of Fine Arts.
The 2024 call for entries awards 41 prizes in total, 8 belonging to the National Award for Artistic Career and 33 to the National Visual Arts Salon Awards (3 Acquisition Awards and 30 Non-Acquisition Awards, for a total amount of $31,000,000 pesos).

"In this 112th edition of the National Salon, design is included as one of the award-winning categories. We recognize the deep historical links between art and design, as well as the growing number of artists who channel their creativity into functional objects that embellish and transform everyday spaces. Following the tradition of the National Salon, which since 1913 has included architecture and decorative arts among its main sections, we want to highlight and reward those pieces, whether industrial or artisanal, that combine aesthetics and functionality, making a significant contribution to the material culture of our country"*, stressed María Paula Zingoni, director of the Palais de Glace.

As for the juries, the Salon comprises: a regional pre-selection jury (seven members, chosen by the artists from among those who apply), a selection and award jury (five members, of which two are chosen by the artists and three by the National Secretariat of Culture).

The Lifetime Achievement Awards, on the other hand, have a jury of 7 members, 2 representatives of the MNBA and 5 appointed by the National Secretariat of Culture (1 specialist in Argentine art and 4 chosen from the list of applicants).
