Courage for Rage: The Revival of the Political Poster

Courage for Rage: The Revival of the Political Poster

Political posters are experiencing a revival. The “Mut zur Wut” Poster Festival (literally “Courage for Rage”) has, in just a few years, gained international recognition—receiving over 2,500 submissions from 54 countries annually. It’s a showcase for committed creatives who express their outrage over injustice through bold visual messages—even in the face of censorship in their home countries.

Each year, 30 winning posters are displayed in public spaces, right where political change often begins: on the streets—sparking public attention and discussion.

“Mut zur Wut” consciously transforms public space into a stage for visual resistance. It’s a pocket of freedom within otherwise fully monitored and commercialized urban environments. The street becomes a giant gallery, reclaiming space from corporate advertising and turning it into a platform for critical thought.

Artists are free to choose their topic, but in the spirit of “Mut zur Wut,” the subject should carry critical, social, political and/or personal content expressed through a powerful visual statement.

The 30 selected posters, chosen by an international jury, are displayed in waves on busy streets and popular locations, creating thousands of daily interactions. This constant exposure encourages the public to decipher sometimes subtle or complex messages and engage deeply with the themes—a classic aim of political art: to provoke thought.

The “Mut zur Wut” traveling exhibition has been shown in cities such as Heidelberg, Mannheim, Berlin, Munich, Giessen, Lucerne (Switzerland), Perugia (Italy), Oaxaca (Mexico), Kütahya (Turkey), and recently, London.
