Ana Mercedes Hoyos - El Universo de Ana Mercedes Hoyos
This exhibition is above all a tribute to Ana Mercedes Hoyos (Bogotá, 1942-2014) ten years after her death. She is a recognized figure of Colombian and Latin American art from the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century.
In this exhibition it is possible to see works from several of her stages, including Ventanas, Atmósferas, and Palenqueras, in which the artist's tireless search is evident, which was not limited only to painting but also to observing, investigating, researching and reflecting.
As Luis Fernando Pradilla, director of the gallery, points out, “Ana Mercedes Hoyos’ artistic evolution could be thought of as a succession of expressive investigations, with long stays in diverse currents of painting and a deep work of assimilation. In all her stops in the history of art and in the permanent exercise of appropriation of these, the artist displayed an astonishing capacity for dissection and managed to trace, throughout a meticulous creative process, her intimate and personal version of the heritage of the West. The creative game in which her greatest virtues were concentrated consisted of apprehending in depth and reformulating.” The cultural wealth of the country has been present in her work, which she expressed through the luminosity of the Caribbean and its inhabitants through the heritage of the Caribbean geography, in particular her investigation and her work inspired by San Basilio de Palenque.
