Doral International Art Fair, a boutique fair where 22 galleries were presented
Doral International Art Fair, (DIAF), held between November 7 and 10, is the youngest of all the contemporary art fairs that take place in Miami. Directed by Jesús Alberto Fuenmayor, it premiered last year at the Doral Cultural Art Center in the city of Doral. This year, 2024, in the same cultural center, it has already run its second edition.
It is a “boutique” fair where a total of 22 national and international galleries were presented, although the majority were national and within these, above all, the Miami galleries. In this group, for example, Art Nouveau, Ninoska Huerta, Art Media, ArtConection, Mundo Arte and Meta Miami stand out. Among the institutions, collections and projects, the participation of the Spanish Cultural Center of Miami (CCEMIAMI), Miami International Fine Art (MIFA), The Bright Foundation, Fuentes Angarita Collection, among others, stands out.
In the organization of the DIAF, the careful manners, well-assembled stands and the close, one might say affable and almost personalized treatment of the organization with the gallery owners, artists and the general public are striking. A massive influx of public of all ages has marked the passage of these days of the fair. But in this enthusiastic reception, the young public has been the main protagonist, for a city that is also very young.
The curatorial committee of DIAF was formed by: Félix Zuazo, Adriana Meneses Imber and Elizabeth Hazim Castillo, in charge of the selection of the galleries and the projects that formed this new edition. It is a selection where the variety of formats stands out, because the public was able to appreciate painting, sculpture, photography, digital art and installation art. In the spectrum of works, the presence of abstract painting and sculpture was notable, and within this field, geometric abstraction with works by established masters of Latin American abstraction such as Cruz Diez and Soto. But new values of abstraction could also be appreciated, such as, among others, Paul Amundarain. Figurative, realist and neo-figurative painting also had an important presence, in the selection of the Mundo arte gallery, with works by Marco Carida and in The Bright Foundation, by Ivonne Ferrer, among others.
Two large galleries, Art Noveau and Ninoska Huerta, had the largest presence of Latin American abstract art, while Art Media, a gallery specialized in photography, attended with an excellent representation of photography with works by Magui Trujillo (The Breath of the Wind Series, 2015-2018) and Claudia Ammirata (Somewere, North Italy, 2019 and Like Yesterday Caracas, 2020, among others). Expanded painting could be seen in the works of Emilia Martin Fierro at the stand of the Spanish Cultural Center of Miami with a new series of four paintings entitled Maps of Interstices, 2024.
Sculpture, for its part, had an important presence with works in the special projects section by: Paul Amundarain, Saul Galavis, Ana María Nava and Florencio Gelabert. In the installation section, the projects Carolina Vollmer (Alchemy of Wills: Resilience) sponsored by Meta Miami and the installation by Alexandra de Yavorski attracted attention.
Various events took place within the framework of the fair, including a tribute to one of the great figures in research and dissemination of Latin American art: Sofía Imber. The fair also provided a space for the presentation of the book “She is me”, presented by the author herself, Ella Cisneros. The event was marked by a lively exchange between the audience present and the author about her career, both in her profile as a promoter and as a collector of contemporary Latin American art. Doral International Fair, in its second edition, has exceeded the expectations of the previous edition, promoting the knowledge of national and international art in its different aspects and styles in quantity and quality, but with an emphasis on the projection of contemporary art of the Miami artistic community.
