The Fine Arts of Bilbao receives a donation of 98 works from the Bergé Collection

In the last 10 years, donations have increased the assets of the Bilbao museum by 15 million euros

This Thursday, the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao presented the donation of 98 works of contemporary art, especially from the United States and Latin America, from the collection of the Bergé company.

The Bergé y Cía business group, dedicated to maritime transport, began this collection in the 1980s so that the company "would leave the following generations a legacy of what was happening in the world at the end of the last century and the beginning of this," said the company's vice president, Pedro Enciso.

The collection brings together works of social denunciation, with themes related to the lack of communication of the time, the lack of care for the environment and migrations, among others, he explained.

This donation from the Bergé Collection is highlighted by a large presence of works by women through paintings, works on paper, sculptures, photographs, videos and installations.

Among the pieces from the collection donated to the museum, there are works by established artists around the world in recent years, such as Susana Solano, Cristina Iglesias, David Shrigley and Céline van Balen.

At the moment, due to the museum's works, only six works from the collection are on display, in addition to one previously purchased, by Susana Solano, Cristina Iglesias, Jonathan Borofski, Vik Muniz, Ibon Aranberri and Diango Hernández.

This collection, which in 2015 was included in the Global Corporate Collections of the 80 best corporate collections in the world, will be available for viewing until next December.

The general deputy of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobe, has valued the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts as "an essential factor for the development and conservation of contemporary art."
