The cartoonist Angel Boligan, who was part of the international jury of the last edition of the World Press Cartoon (WPC) was in Caldas with António, the mentor of the event, in June.
The Cuban artist, who lives in Mexico, had already been to Caldas in April to select and award works for this 12th edition and thought that the exhibition at the event “is magnificent!”.
In his opinion, it is “a real privilege” for cartoonists from all over the world to see their works selected for this event.
“Anthony (Antunes), in addition to being a drawing genius, takes care of every detail of this global initiative”, said Angel Boligan to Gazeta das Caldas, who returned to Portugal in June to participate in Porto Cartoon 2017, where he brought the third prize for a work on the wall that Donald Trump promised to build and which forms the blade of a guillotine. The Cuban came to Caldas to visit the exhibition and liked that it had been transferred to the spa town, allowing it to be catapulted to an international level. “As Caldas is already a city of the arts, which makes it ideal for hosting this event”, said the author who made his debut on the jury, after having competed and been distinguished in several editions of the WPC. Angel Boligan was the winner of the Grand Prize in the 2006 edition.
In his opinion, this show is the most important that takes place in the world and the authors work, “throughout the year to be able to compete for the WPC”, said Angel Boligan who thinks that the event should take root in Caldas.
For this author, cartoonists are the graphic chroniclers of the world and when he puts a book on recent history and another on caricature side by side, he always prefers the latter. The cartoons show "a reality seen from another angle, more realistic, where we can analyze the facts with humor, in a more popular and credible way", he justified.
