Bretislav Kovarik was born on February 26, 1950 in Pardubice, Czech Republic. He lives and works in Trutnov, Czech Republic. He graduated from the Hradec Králové College of Education in 1972 and his original profession was that of a primary school teacher. Later he worked as a driving teacher, truck driver, educator, program director of the Casa de la Cultura department, night watchman, and then became an independent artist since 1991. Admiration for cartoons as an advertising genre aroused in him a wave of new caricaturists, who in the then Czechoslovakia began to publish in a short period of democratization of the society in 1968. The first attempts to start their own creation were in 1975, their first works were published in the Brno magazine "Rovnost" in 1977 Gradually he began to collaborate with various Czech (Czechoslovak) magazines and also with foreign agencies. For his creative work he has won numerous awards in national and international cartoon competitions. In addition to cartoons, he also concentrates on caricature portraiture and other artistic pursuits. Since 1999 Bretislav Kovarik has been the President of the Czech Union of Cartoonists. Between 1996 and 2008 he was co-organizer of the Biennial International Cartoon Competition “Humorest” in Hradec Králové.
