Carlos María de Santiago was a distinguished Uruguayan painter and diplomat born on March 14, 1875, in Montevideo. He specialized in landscape painting and had a significant impact on the art scene in Uruguay. Santiago’s education in fine arts was completed at the University of Montevideo in 1897. His talent was recognized early on, and he received a government scholarship in 1904 to further his studies in Europe, where he spent time in Madrid and Paris1. Upon returning to Uruguay in 1908, Santiago also served in the diplomatic corps, with postings in Colombia, Venezuela, Paraguay, and Chile. His contributions to both art and diplomacy were acknowledged with several awards and honors, including the Order of the British Empire, the Order of Boyacá from Colombia, and the Order of Merit from Chile.
