Andrei Popov was born in 1970 in Saint Petersburg. His military family background allowed him to study at the Mozhaysky Military Air Academy between 1987 and 1992. In 1995 he abandoned his military career to become a freelance cartoonist. His career took off in 1997 when he started working at the "Business St Petersburg" newspaper. Over the years, the artist collaborated with numerous newspapers and magazines. He is a member of the "Russian Cartoon Club", the international club "Cartoonion" and the "Cartoonbank" project. Throughout his career, Popov frequently participated in numerous Russian and international exhibitions and competitions, both as a participant and as a judge. He also received top awards for his creations in countries such as Italy, Hungary, Turkey, Luxembourg, Denmark, China, Azerbaijan, Belgium and Poland. His other talents include book illustration and creating prints for the fashion industry. In his images, our trivial everyday moments take on meaning. People are represented according to the most basic rhythm: day and night, atmospheric phenomena and seasons of the year. In reality, they face the most important questions. Between spirit and body, senses and reflection, life and art, microcosm of your apartments, beds or chairs and macrocosm. The main characters are usually a woman and a man, carefully and deliberately chosen to match each and every anecdote, they are of different ages, features, perhaps from different backgrounds, while at the same time being universal. It is a simple and humble world, but at the same time extremely “rich”. It is a space full of concepts, full of colors and brightness created in a masterful way. In these works light plays a crucial role.
