Piet Mondrian, originally named Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan, was a Dutch painter renowned for his role in the development of modern abstract art and as a major proponent of the Dutch abstract art movement known as De Stijl (“The Style”). Born on March 7, 1872, in Amersfoort, Netherlands, and passing away on February 1, 1944, in New York, USA, Mondrian’s work transitioned from figurative painting to an increasingly abstract style, until he reached a point where his artistic language consisted of simple geometric elements1.
