The individual was one of nine children, and his father worked as a goldsmith. In 1882, he joined the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro but left after two years to study under German artist Georg Grimm. After Grimm’s departure, he continued learning independently. His work was purchased by Emperor Pedro II, allowing him to resume formal studies in Europe. He attended the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, taught by Filippo Carcano. Upon returning to Brazil, he participated in the “Exposição Gerais de Belas Artes.” Later, he became a landscape painting professor at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes, introducing plein-air painting to his students. Due to disagreements with ENBA, he established his own school, the “Escola do Ar Livre”
