Shaun Tan grew up in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. At school he became known as the "good cartoonist", which partly made up for the fact that he was always the shortest boy in each class. He graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1995 with honors in Fine Art and English Literature. He currently works as an artist and author in "Melbourne". Shaun began drawing and painting images for science fiction and horror stories in small print magazines as a teenager and has since become best known for his picture books that deal with social and historical issues through dreamlike imagery. The Rabbits, The Red Tree, Tales from the Outer Suburbs, Summer Rules, and the acclaimed wordless novel “Arrival” have been translated into multiple languages and enjoyed by readers of all ages. Shaun has also worked as a theater designer, concept artist for animated features including Pixar's WALL-E, and directed the Academy Award-winning short film "The Lost Thing." In 2011 he received the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in honor of his contribution to international children's literature.
