Vasily Semionovitch Sadovnikov born December 28, 1800 (January 9, 1801 in the Gregorian calendar) in Saint Petersburg and died March 10, 1879 (March 22 in the Gregorian calendar) in the same city in Russia, is a Russian watercolorist, painter, draftsman1 . He is the brother of the architect Pyotr Sadovnikov (1796-1877). He is self-taught and lives in the condition of serfs belonging to Princess Nathalie Galitzine. This served as a model for Alexander Pushkin for the character of the old countess in the story of The Queen of Spades. From the state of serf he obtained the status of free man in 1838, after the death of the princess, when he had already become a renowned artist. But according to certain sources he still did not follow the academy courses and obtained the title of unclassified artist in 18383. It was also by himself that he learned the rules of perspective in painting.
