Samuel Casal was born in 1974 and lives in Florianópolis, in southern Brazil. He has been working as a graphic artist since 1990 and has illustrated books and magazines distributed worldwide. Casal has shown his work in individual and collective exhibitions in Brazil and abroad. He has won several awards such as the HQMIX for best Brazilian illustrator for three times; the Jabuti, the highest prize in Brazilian literature; and an Honorable Mention at the 2013 Brazilian Graphic Design Biennial. He created exclusive commissioned pieces for brands such as Nike and Rede Globo. Casal started his work in digital art in 1993 as an editorial illustrator, at a time when computers were just starting to be used as drawing tools in Brazil. Since then, the artist has created his artworks in the same vector drawing software, by just using the mouse, wired directly to the computer. Without any sketches or previous projects, the artist explores software-limited characteristics to create hybrid compositions of synthetic elements and textures with a signature style created by his own gestural movements. Drawing only in the digital environment for many years, the artist has created his own style accomplishing aesthetic similarities with ancestral engraving techniques. Taking a reverse path, he has also moved to experimenting with primitive analog techniques such as woodcut. Currently, the artist is dedicated to these two worlds, technological and primitive, mixing both and taking his experiments from one to the other, between wood matrices, vectors, ceramics and pixels.
