By LatAm ARTE

Hendrik Gericke is a South African artist who makes photographs using a broad and well-defined set of tools. He lives to tell stories through these images and often helps others tell their own. This has led him down a winding path of film productions, book illustrations and projects beyond the realm of easy classification. After graduating from high school, Hendrik embarked on a quest for professional artistic enlightenment. This journey took him to London and beyond, exploring the rich world of European art and comics before returning home to complete a diploma in animation. Seeing the limited opportunities in the ant farm that is the Cape Town animation world, he continued to look to the future and spent time working as a photography assistant, builder and carpenter before taking the step to become a full time artist. Breaking into the gallery scene was challenging at first, but eventually some opportunities presented themselves, both exhibiting and working as a narrative illustrator. Initial work was limited to the ink line drawings that set Hendrik's work apart from the beginning, but soon developed into a much broader toolkit with the addition of oil and digital painting skills, as well as photography and modeling. 3D. After a prolific period of local exhibition, Hendrik has gone on to show work in New York, Italy, New Zealand and Australia. Always looking for new directions and interesting assignments, the future is a blank canvas, but not for long. Hendrik currently lives and works in Sydney, Australia.
