Erik Kriek was born in 1966 in Amsterdam. He studied illustration and graphic arts at the “Rietveld Academy of Art and Design” in Amsterdam. Since he graduated in 1991 he works as a free illustrator. In 2008, Kriek received the “Strips Chaps” award for all of his works. Kriek's style is often described as having a sense of “postmodern irony, infused with a retro-comic and pop culture sensibility.” His fluid brush style images appear in a wide variety of media. Much of his work consists of editorial illustrations for magazines and newspapers, published inside and outside his native Netherlands. He has also designed and illustrated film and theater posters, book covers, CD covers, business logos, t-shirts, postcards, skateboards, snowboards and more. In 2009, “Onitsuka Tiger” released sneakers with graphics specially designed by Kriek, to celebrate the Japanese company's 60th anniversary. Among Kriek's international clients are or were the following companies: “VPRO Gids”, “Vrij Nederland”, “Hp/De Tijd”, “NRC”, “De Volkskrant”, “Onze Taal”, “Weltwoche (CH) ”, “Die Welt (D)”, “Ogilvy (NL)”, “KesselsKramer (NL)”, “MC Saatchi (GB)”, “Maxim” (USA), “Boston Globe” (USA .), “Motorola/Burton (GB)”, “Rome SDS” (USA), to name just a few. Kriek's most recent publication is a comic book adaptation of several short stories by science fiction and horror author Lovecraft. The book was published in 2012 in the Netherlands and was well received by critics and readers alike, and has since been translated into Spanish, French, German, Italian, Swedish and Serbian.
