Vanessa Alexandra Zúñiga Tinizaray was born in Loja, a small city in the south of Ecuador. Due to one of those unexpected events in life, she ended up studying Design and fell hopelessly in love with the discipline, which led her, once she finished her degree in her country, to further her studies in the Master of Design at the University of Palermo, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. «I arrived at the University of Palermo with a delay of three weeks due to processing issues for my student visa and when I arrived all my classmates were already focused on their thesis topics and I did not have any. In those days I had to go to an antique store located in the Recoleta neighborhood, in Buenos Aires, to thank some of my brother-in-law's relatives for helping me with paperwork to enter the University. When I was in front of them, they asked me how my first days in Buenos Aires were going. I told them that I was a little lost with the selection of the thesis topic, that although I liked reading about history, I wanted to focus on things related to Greek mythology and design. Their expression is so present in my mind, since they were two people those in front of me, who looked at each other. One of them approached her bookshelf and took out an old book by Ricardo Rojas called “Syllabary of American Decoration” and told me, “here, look at it.” I opened the book and again there was no turning back. That first time I ran my eyes over each page of the book and I understood, without being told, what that look between them meant. “You have so much potential in the history of your country, you just haven't realized it, and you want to look at other cultures that have nothing to do with yours.” This is what I imagine they were thinking, with an Argentine accent, of course.»
