What is Painting

Painting is a very old artistic expression that uses coloring techniques with liquid, powder or paste pigments on a surface.

This language has accompanied the development of societies for centuries, being one of the most prominent expressions in the arts.

However, from the 19th century onwards, with the creation of photography, painting suffered a decline. Currently, with the evolution of technology, it acquires various techniques, models and trends.
Types of painting

Paintings can be figurative (with representations of reality) or abstract (without recognizable figures). The most widespread genres of painting are:

still life;
portrait;
landscape.

Painting techniques

The main painting techniques are:

Watercolor - the paint is dissolved in water, producing a smooth and fluid effect.
Fresco - pigments mixed in mortar for permanent mural painting.
Oil painting - oil-based paint for long-lasting luminous painting.
Tempera painting - pigments mixed with binders (such as egg yolk) for an opaque and vibrant effect.

Acrylic paint - pigments mixed with a synthetic medium for a fast-drying, vibrantly colored painting.

Cave painting

The oldest paintings, made in prehistoric times, are called cave paintings. They were drawn by various ancient peoples and were generally made on the walls of caves.

The pigments used in the paintings and the materials used were very different from those used today. In prehistoric times, the most commonly used materials were stones, blood, a mixture of vegetables, and other organic elements.
