What is urban art to you? Many people first think of Graffiti, but it is actually much more comprehensive than you might think. Today we will talk a little more about its emergence, its importance and the main types of artistic manifestations that we have in the city.

Urban Art: what it is, its origin and importance

First, let's talk about the concept, which is very simple. We are talking about the most diverse types of artistic manifestations that take place in public spaces such as streets, buildings, houses, tunnels, viaducts, etc. Paintings, graffiti, sculptures, theatrical, musical or circus performances, posters, living statues, among others, are all considered a type of urban art.

Although it does not have a precise origin, according to records it is believed that it emerged in Pre-Socratic Ancient Greece. It was through the Homeric “Aedos” (or singers), who spoke in verses and songs, in order to engage passersby with their works.

Later, we had other artists, the troubadours, who were noble artists responsible for reciting verses, melodies, poems and stories sung at parties in cities, castles and palaces. Finally, we arrived at the 20th century, when urban art began to have a more dynamic and temporary concept.

The latter refers especially to the fact that, in addition to presentations, works made in public spaces are subject to all kinds of unforeseen events. For example, graffiti that is lost when a building is demolished, paintings that are covered, etc.

The importance of urban art is much greater than one might imagine, as it often seeks to take art beyond restricted spaces (and which often not everyone has access to). In addition, it has a unique characteristic that there is no need for a special event, only for the artist to go out on the streets and express his art.
