Graffiti was born as a form of street expression in big cities, particularly in New York in the 1970s. At first, it was a protest demonstration and a way to mark territory in marginalized neighborhoods, but over time it evolved into a legitimate form of art. Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring were some of the first artists to bring graffiti to museums and galleries, fusing urban culture with contemporary art. However, the most emblematic figure of street art today is Banksy, who with his satirical style and political message has managed to impact the traditional art world. Today, urban art has become a form of social intervention, bringing powerful messages to the streets and challenging the established structures of conventional art.
