Graphic Design is aimed at one of the most popular and ancient forms of communication: visual language. Although its emergence was greatly influenced by the creation of Johann Gutenberg's mobile printing press - which was mentioned by Philip Meggs in his book “The History of Graphic Design” -, it was only in the 20th century that it became as we know it today.
Over the years, big names emerged and became references. Get to know 5 of them and some of their projects now.
1 – Paul Rand
Born in 1914 in Brooklyn, New York, Paul Rand was a teacher, writer, art director, designer and design consultant for several companies. Throughout his career, he became known for developing logos and book covers inspired by modern art.
2 – Herb Lubalin
The North American Herbert Frederick Lubalin was a typographer, typeface, designer, teacher, businessman and founder of ITC (International Typeface Corporation). He has won hundreds of awards throughout his career and participated in different ones. exhibitions, such as the Society of Typographic Arts, held in Chicago in 1957.
3 – Saul Bass
Saul Bass, born in the 1920s in New York, was a designer and filmmaker. Recognized for his participation in creating the identity and final credits of films, and also for developing logos for large companies. One of his most popular designs was the 1974 United Airlines logo.
4 – Aloisio Magalhães
Aloisio was born in northeastern Brazil, in 1927. He was a painter, designer, engraver, set designer and costume designer. He is considered a pioneer in graphic design in Brazil and was responsible for designing logos known throughout the country to this day. Examples of these are: the 4th Centenary symbol of Rio de Janeiro; symbol for the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo and also the creation of designs for Brazilian banknotes and coins.
5 – Alexandre Wollner
Born in 1928 in the capital of São Paulo, Alexandre Wollner was one of the graphic designers considered pioneers in introducing the profession in the country and also a pioneer of modern design. He was president of the Brazilian Association of Industrial Design and had projects exhibited at MASP. In 2003, he celebrated 50 years as a designer.
