Main movements of Contemporary Art

The main avant-garde movements and schools that emerged based on Contemporary Art are associated with the idea of communication, not consumption. Generally, these movements are revealed through different languages and through constant experimentation with new techniques.

Contemporary Art encompasses some important artistic movements, among which the following stand out: Pop Art, Conceptual Art, Digital Art, Photography, Installation, Urban Art, Body Art, Arte povera, New Media Art, Hyperrealism, Photorealism, Op Art and Kinetic art.
Some contemporary artists are recognized worldwide for their work, including: Andy Warhol, Bansky, Damien Hirst, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Anselm Kiefer, Richard Serra, Bill Viola, Jeff Koons, Marina Abramovic, Gerhard Richter, Takashi Murakami, Lucian Freud, Keith Haring.

In Brazil, Contemporary Art began to develop in the 1950s, with the avant-garde movement known as Neoconcretism. Since then, some artists have become known for innovative, lively and authorial art.

Among the main Brazilian artists who promoted contemporary art are: Hélio Oiticica (1937 - 1980); Romero Britto (1963); Ferreira Gullar (1930 - 2016); Amilcar de Castro (1920 - 2002); Lygia Clark (1920 - 1988); Lygia Pape (1927 - 2004); Aluísio Carvão (1920-2001; Franz Weissmann (1911-2005); Hércules Barsotti (1914-2010); Willys de Castro (1926 - 1988); Cildo Meireles (1948-); among others.
